Editorial Review
With its fully retro design, faithfully reproduced down to the smallest detail, this cherry-red, rubber-wheeled tricycle is an undisputed classic. Apparently they do still make them like they used to. The rugged trike features a chrome front fender; a double-deck, step-in back (so kids can climb onto the smooth metal seat in a snap); red-and-white tassels on the rubber-coated handlebars; a 12-inch-high, steel-spoked wheel; and even an old-fashioned bell. --Paul Hughes

5 out of 5 stars Great trike for many years   June 10, 2002

We received this 12-inch tricycle (Model #33) as a gift for our son who is almost 5 and very tall. I wish I had found one for him to try when he was 3 so I could have seen how much legroom was available. The nearest ToysRus does not carry this model trike only the smaller 10-inch. Other brand 12-inch tricycles were too small for him. From what I have gathered from this site and experience, it should be labeled 3-7 years. I believe he will get 1 or 2 years out of this before he would outgrow it. With his leg at the highest position on the pedal, he has 3½ inches of room before the handlebar. I think I can raise the handlebars at least another ½ inch and still be safe.

The trike is very sturdy and easy to maneuver so he can ride in our basement. My son is on the reckless side so this trike is perfect, though he has to be careful not to turn the wheel to sharp. I don't want him riding a 2-wheel bike before he can understand that he has to really watch where he is going. (We also live on a steep hill with nowhere to learn how to ride a 2-wheel bike.)

The trike comes with most of it put together which is really nice. Years ago you had to put on pedals, handle grips, etc. All that is needed to put the trike together is a few drops of oil, hammer, 2 adjustable wrenches, & screwdriver for bell connector. Only 4 things had to be tightened besides attaching the bell. I spent more time verifying all the parts were there (some are attached to the trike pieces), than putting it together. The seat is adjustable to 3 levels.

It is nice that the bell comes with the trike. It can be used by thumb or just spun to make the bell ring. My son loves the bell.

My 5 years old got on this and pedaled around right away. I've never seen her pedal any bike or tricycle before except the fancy. expensive theraputic ones at her preschool. I read some bad reviews but decided to get this anyway. Our other options were much more money, so I figured I'd try this first. This has not toppled or tipped once in 4 monther of having it. You cant compare the cheap plastic trikes on the market to this. and radio flyers customer service is excellent. Our bike came with a dented fender they sent us a replacement. Oh my daughter is about 39 inches tall. We have this set in the middle position so we still have growing room. If you have a smaller/younger kid go for the 10 inch one. We loved this so much we bought our 2 year old nephew the 10 and its perfect for him. We're glad we ignored the bad reviews and gave it a shot. We all love this bike.

5 out of 5 stars Great trike!   September 29, 2002

My parents bought this tricycle for my son when he was just short of 2 and a half. At the time he could just barely reach the pedals with the seat on the lowest position. He loved it! He did fall a few times the first day but quickly learned to slow down a bit on sharp turns and within a couple days was no longer falling. He now rides all over the neighborhood like a bat out of hell (he is now 2 years and 10 months) and has a blast. Other neighborhood kids ride the trike and quickly learn how to compensate by not doing sharp turns too fast. This is a trike that will develop your child's coordination so that later on he will have it easier when he learns to ride a 2-wheeler. It is also a beautiful bike! I recommend this trike to any kid whose parents are looking for a fun trike which will also help develop their coordination.

It is true that at first the handlebars would come misalligned with respect to the front wheel very easily. However, my husband easily fixed this problem by tightening the steering arrangement with 2 wrenches, which took him less than 5 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars my 2 year old loves it   April 2, 2004

I'm glad I didn't read these reviews before we bought this for our son's 2nd birthday. He's had it a week and loves it! Yes, it's a bit unstable but duh! it's a bike! Of course it'll tip if you take corners too fast -- it's called physics. Didn't any of you have this as a child? I had one exactly like it and I loved it just as my son does now. With the seat in the lowest position he can reach the pedals with no problems. Why would anyone buy a bike that's too big for your kid? Don't give this a bad rating just because your child can't reach the pedals -- that's not the manufacturers fault!! Take the kid to the store and have them sit on it to try it out... you'll be doing that with 2 wheelers later on so you might as well start now. Kids fall off bikes all the time -- that's why it's the law for kids under 18 to wear helmets while on bikes (or scooters or skates or other fun outdoor toys). My son can pedal this alot easier than the plastic 3 wheeler we bought him a few months ago... he still can't reach to pedal that one!

5 out of 5 stars Great Example of a Timeless Classic   March 31, 2004

I had to write a review after reading some of the negative ones submitted. We bought this trike for our son when he was 2 1/2 and he LOVED it. He is average size and simply adjusted to the size of the thing. Unlike a bike with training wheels, he began riding this right away and didn't really need to "learn" how. No wonder this has withstood the test of time. He is now five and switches back and forth between his trike and his bike. This is far and away his favorite toy and worth every penny we paid. His three year old sister is now taking it over and pleads to go out and ride. A must purchase!
I gave it 4 stars for durability because the bell broke within the first summer and is not repairable. Besides that, great performance.
